At Hershey Christian, it's our mission to provide students with a "well
rounded education that equips them to live faithful, God-honoring lives,
whatever their vocation or calling."
We pursue that mission in myriad ways, but three in particular best characterize the HCS approach: We do it through caring teachers, small class sizes, and a K-12 curriculum delivered from a Christian perspective.
Caring Teachers
Like many teachers in many schools, our teachers have strong academic qualifications and high expectations for their students. But beyond that, you're likely to get something more from an HCS teacher: genuine care.
A lot of people apply for our teaching positions, but we select only those who have both the knowledge and the empathy to nurture students. It's not just a job for these remarkable individuals; it's a calling to mentor the next generation, so they consistently go the extra mile to do so.
One parent's comments capture this well: "Our son's Spanish teacher emailed us to say that she was concerned that our son seemed more distracted in class than usual. She wanted to know whether anything was wrong or whether there was something more she could do to connect with him. Wow! We never, never got that kind of personalized attention at our last school."
This is what happens when teachers genuinely care about their students and it happens on a daily basis at HCS. Teachers set the bar high for their classes, but then compassionately attend to their students - indeed love their students - as individuals.
Small Classes
Another reason Hershey Christian teachers can offer personalized attention to your child is because our classes are considerably smaller than public school classes. Our student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1 and our average class size is 17.
We think that keeping classes small simply makes educational sense. It not only gives teachers more time with each student, it also gives us the flexibility to shift an advanced student into a higher grade for some subjects, thereby tailoring the program to that student's abilities. Despite the economic pressures to change this small class approach, we won't. We're both committed and called to be a more intimate educational environment.
Christian Worldview
Faithful, effective Christian education transforms students to see the world from God's perspective. No matter the subject-science, math, literature, history, music, reading-we are intentional at HCS about helping students "think Christianly" about the material.
This goes much further than teachers offering an inspirational prayer before a class, or including a Bible course in the curriculum, or weekly, upbeat worship service featuring a student-led band. Sure, we do all those things, but what we mean by "education from a Christian worldview" is so much more. It's integrating Christian principles into the very DNA of the curriculum-into all the subject matter. It's modeling for students what it means to be of good character by how the teachers and administrators comport themselves. And it's shaping kids to reject relativism and self-absorption, to instead become more God-centered in their disposition.
So in the upper grades, you'll find teachers challenging students to "think about their thinking," so to speak - to think about the assumptions underlying their answers and to examine those assumptions in light of Christian principles. In the earlier grades, you'll find teachers connecting familiar Bible stories to conflicts on the playground or to temptations to lie or to their work ethic. On the sports fields, you'll find coaches who define success not just by a win-loss record, but by athletes habitually pursuing excellence and integrity. In the award-winning music program, you'll find a leader encouraging students to perform well for God. And throughout our programs, you'll find gifted educators teaching the centrality of God in all knowledge and in all circumstances - a far cry from the hidden curriculum in public schools that God is irrelevant. It's all part of our mission to equip students "to live faithful, God-honoring lives, whatever their vocation or calling."
The Lord continues to bless this school mightily. Our students-students who walk with Jesus daily, students whose SAT scores average 140 points higher than the national average, students of competence and character-are the fruit of His blessing, and for each one of them we are truly grateful. We would feel privileged to serve your children as well.
